All about topsoil!

Spring is the time of year when we all start to enjoy the warmer weather and start to venture outside to start cleaning and tidying our gardens/outside areas.

One of the main ingredients to give our gardens a refresh is topsoil.

It helps in a variety of tasks around the garden to get it ready for the summer months which leads to a gorgeous garden.

If you are new to gardening, here are a few questions answered.

What is topsoil?

It is the uppermost, outermost layer of soil. The soil is formed over many years and as rocks become altered, they break down into very small parts. As this is happening many other organic matters will naturally occur on the earth’s surface which all mix into the topsoil.

Topsoil is full of organic matter (what is left after plants and insects die), micro-organisms, and nutrients that plants and grass love and will thrive on.

When to add topsoil?

Late spring/early summer or when you have started to mow the lawn on a weekly basis, this is the perfect time to add topsoil to your garden.

What can topsoil be used for?

Topsoil is used in all gardening and landscaping projects.

It can be used to cover the ground to help repair damaged lawns and makes a great base for new turf. Fill low areas of the lawn to make the space level, once they are filled, sow your grass seeds, water daily, and watch the grass grow!

In paved gardens where there is no access to soil, topsoil can be used in raised beds for growing many plants, including vegetables.

Topsoil is great for creating new beds and borders in your garden, your plants, flowers, and trees are going to love life if you use topsoil.

What to do before lying topsoil.

To start off you need to clear the existing area before adding a layer of new topsoil. We recommend that you should turn over approximately the top 5 inches of the existing soil, this will help loosen the ground and help to make sure you get the best from your new layer of topsoil.

Make sure you remove all weeds from the existing area, if you have a lot it may be worth killing these off first as old weeds will simply grow through the new soil. You could use a weed killer or by removing the weeds and roots as you go.
